Al Pacico Named 62nd SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Recipient

Al Pacino becomes the 62nd recipient of the SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award, the largest actors union's highest honor, with the presentation set for the 33rd Actor Awards on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2027, at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles. He is 86. The union announced the choice this week.
Six decades of screen work sit behind the citation. The list runs from The Godfather (1972), Serpico (1973) and The Godfather Part II (1974) through Scarface (1983), Scent of a Woman (1992), Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) and The Insider (1999), landing on two 2019 titles, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Irishman. Television credits include Angels in America (2003), You Don't Know Jack (2010) and Phil Spector (2013).
The trophy case is already crowded. Pacino holds an Oscar, two Emmys, two Tonys, the Golden Globes' Cecil B. DeMille Award, the AFI Life Achievement Award, a Kennedy Center Honor and the National Medal of Arts. The SAG-AFTRA prize adds a ninth distinct honor to that shelf, and places him in a roster that runs six decades deep.
What does the award actually recognize?
The union gives the Life Achievement Award annually to an actor who fosters the "finest ideals of the acting profession." The wording is broad. The precedent is specific.
Past recipients number 61 and include James Stewart, Gregory Peck, Sidney Poitier, Katharine Hepburn, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, Robert Redford, Elizabeth Taylor, Betty White, Rita Moreno, Robert De Niro, Helen Mirren, Sally Field, Barbra Streisand, Jane Fonda and, most recently listed, Harrison Ford. Pacino joins De Niro as the second Godfather co-star in the honor's ranks. The roll call began with Eddie Cantor and Stan Laurel, which gives a sense of the institution's age.
SAG-AFTRA president Sean Astin framed the citation in personal terms. "Like so many actors, I have spent my life in awe and appreciation of the force of nature that is Al Pacino," Astin said in a statement. "When you watch him perform, you are witnessing a student and a master."
Astin continued: "Al Pacino is an artist of extraordinary courage, intensity and heart whose work has always set an exceptional standard of skill and talent. All of that and he's just plain fun to watch. SAG-AFTRA is proud to celebrate Al Pacino with our union's highest honor."
Pacino, for his part, kept it characteristically oblique. "I wondered and wandered most of my life, but have always felt at home with a script and my fellow actors," he said. "It's the work and the actors along the way that have been among the greatest joys of my life. It's an honor to be recognized by SAG-AFTRA in celebrating the journey."
How does the honor fit the calendar?
The Feb. 28, 2027 date gives the ceremony its customary anchor: one marquee tribute, one veteran, one speech that tends to run long. Pacino's acceptance remarks have historically rewarded patience.
For the union, the pick is conservative in the best sense. A 62-name list that already holds De Niro, Mirren and Streco-strength figures makes room for one more. Few will argue with the arithmetic. Sixty-one predecessors, one new name, and a ceremony 33 editions old. The math holds.
The award makes no change to competitive categories. It changes the evening. Book the Feb. 28 date accordingly.
