Jay-Z Takes the 2027 Halftime Stage — and Pencils In His Own Emmy Bids
Puck reports Jay-Z will front the 2027 Super Bowl halftime show he produces, setting up three probable Emmy nominations: performer, producer and director.
Judges’ notes
- Jay-Z will headline the 2027 Super Bowl halftime show he produces, per Puck
- Bad Bunny's 2026 halftime show set Emmy records with 9 nominations and 7 wins
- Every Roc Nation-produced halftime show since 2020 has earned a Live Variety Special nomination
- Jay-Z already holds Primetime Emmys for the 2022 and 2026 shows plus a co-directing win for 2023
- Prediction: three 2027 Emmy nominations for Jay-Z — performer, producer, director
Jay-Z will headline the Super Bowl LIX-era halftime show slated for 2027, according to Puck, converting his role from Emmy-winning executive producer to featured performer — and, on paper, tripling his own nomination haul.
The move is an executive decision, not a league announcement. Puck reports it; the NFL has not confirmed booking mechanics, timing, or supporting acts. Until the league speaks, every Emmy scenario below rests on one trade report.
How the halftime-Emmy pipeline works
Since Super Bowl LIV, Roc Nation has held the NFL contract to produce the midgame show. The deal carries a built-in awards mechanism: the halftime headliner is, in practice, guaranteed an Emmy ticket. Every edition since 2020 has drawn a nomination for Live Variety Special:
- 2020: Shakira and Jennifer Lopez, with special guests
- 2021: The Weeknd
- 2022: Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent — the winner, and the first hip-hop win in a category Broadway acts traditionally owned
- 2023: Rihanna
- 2024: Usher with Alicia Keys, Jermaine Dupri, H.E.R., will.i.am, Lil Jon, Ludacris
- 2025: Kendrick Lamar with SZA
- 2026: Bad Bunny with Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin
What the record already says
The 2026 Bad Bunny show set the halftime benchmark: nine nominations and seven wins — variety special, directing, music direction, choreography, sound mixing, lighting design, technical direction. Both totals are Emmy records for halftime shows.
Jay-Z himself already holds Primetime Emmys as executive producer of the 2022 and 2026 shows, plus one for co-directing the 2023 event. The 25-time Grammy winner also owns a Sports Emmy for adapting "Run This Town" for 2011 game promos. Lamar's 2025 set missed the variety prize but took Music Direction.
What does this change for the 2027 Emmy race?
Three things, if the booking holds.
First, Jay-Z becomes both performer and producer, so prediction desks now pencil him in for three nominations: featured performer, producer, and director. The headliner guarantee means the performer bid is close to automatic; the other two depend on credited roles the Television Academy verifies months from now.
Second, the performer category gains its biggest-name entrant since Rihanna in 2023. Rival live-event nominees — ceremony specials, tribute broadcasts — face a contender with a built-in audience of Super Bowl size.
Third, the streak math matters. Roc Nation's shows have collected nominations for seven consecutive years. A 2027 bid extends that run to eight and gives Jay-Z a shot at stacking performer, producer and director Emmys from a single broadcast.
The caveats
Puck's report does not specify whether Jay-Z will direct, who shares producing credit, or whether guest performers — the format every edition since 2020 has used — will appear. The 2022 win came from an ensemble; a solo-fronted show carries different craft-award exposure in choreography and music direction, where the 2026 record was set.
The game itself is months away, and Emmy eligibility follows the broadcast date. Nothing is decided in June. But the moment the NFL confirms the booking, three nomination lines move from speculative to probable — and one man controls all of them.
