John Carpenter will receive the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year award at the 77th annual ACE Eddie Awards on Feb. 6, where editors Bonnie Koehler and Christopher Nelson will also receive ACE Career Achievement awards.

The American Cinema Editors ceremony recognizes the year’s best film-editing achievements across film and television. Comedian and actor Patton Oswalt will return as host. The announcement does not identify the voters, describe a jury or set out selection rules for the three announced awards, so it confirms recipients without disclosing how ACE chose them.

What does this change for the editing race?

Before nominations arrive on Jan. 14, the notice fixes three honorees but not the field for individual film and television edits. It also does not say whether the three awards sit outside the competitive category process. For awards trackers, the practical answer is narrow: the honoree list is known; the nominees and the mechanics behind the choices are not.

Carpenter’s filmmaker honor

The award identifies Carpenter as a filmmaker, screenwriter, producer and composer. He reached a broad audience with Halloween in 1978 and subsequently shaped modern horror through directing credits on The Fog, The Thing, Vampires, Escape from New York and They Live. He also composed Lost Themes in 2014 and Cathedral earlier in the year.

“John Carpenter makes movies that get under your skin and stay there,” said Sabrina Plisco, the president of ACE.

“‘Halloween,’ ‘The Thing,’ ‘Escape from New York’ — these films have scared, thrilled and shaped generations of audiences and filmmakers alike. Few directors understand rhythm, tension and restraint the way he does, and he has always trusted his editors to help him find it. That collaboration is exactly what this honor celebrates.”

Carpenter joins former Filmmaker of the Year recipients:

  • Jon M. Chu, John Waters, Spike Lee and Quentin Tarantino
  • Christopher Nolan, Lauren Shuler Donner, Guillermo del Toro and Steven Spielberg
  • Vince Gilligan, J.J. Abrams, Nancy Meyers, Martin Scorsese, George Lucas and the Sundance Institute

Bonnie Koehler’s career achievement

Koehler has worked for more than 40 years and edited 15 feature films, nine primetime television series and eight movies of the week. Her credits include:

  • One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and Poltergeist
  • Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and L.A. Law

Christopher Nelson’s career achievement

Nelson has worked as a producer, director and film editor on more than 70 television series, movies and pilots.

He received a Primetime Emmy for best editing for the series finale of Lost and additional Emmy nominations for Lost, Six Feet Under, China Beach, Mad Men and the pilot of The Greatest American Hero.

  • Recent credits: Bates Motel, Waco and Godfather of Harlem

Plisco also said:

“Bonnie Koehler and Chris Nelson are editors other editors look up to,” Plisco added.

“Bonnie went from ‘American Zoetrope’ to an Emmy nomination for ‘L.A. Law’ and an ACE Eddie nomination for ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,’ television’s longest-running primetime drama.

“Chris cut the finale of ‘Lost,’ one of the most watched and debated hours in television history, and his work on ‘Six Feet Under’ and ‘Mad Men’ helped define prestige television. Both have given generously to our community.”

The announcement fixes three recipients, not the field of category contenders. ACE will reveal nominations on Jan. 14. Because the notice does not disclose how voters and honorees are selected, claims that the three awards alter category voting would go beyond the announcement.

Oswalt will host the ceremony on Feb. 6.
