Beyond the Gates Lands 15 Nominations as the 53rd Daytime Emmys Open
The 53rd Daytime Emmys stream Friday at 8 p.m. ET, with first-year soap Beyond the Gates carrying 15 nominations into a category no debut has ever won.

Judges’ notes
- Beyond the Gates received 15 nominations at the 53rd Daytime Emmys, a record-scale showing for a first-year soap.
- No soap opera has ever won Best Daytime Drama Series in its first season.
- The ceremony streams at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT from the Hollywood Palladium, with no host and no linear TV broadcast.
- General Hospital enters as five-time reigning Best Drama Series champion with 13 nominations; The Young and the Restless leads soaps with 18.
- Genie Francis receives the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The 53rd Daytime Emmy Awards hand out their trophies Friday night, and one number frames the race: 15 nominations for "Beyond the Gates," a first-year soap that no debut series has matched at this stage. No soap opera has ever won Best Daytime Drama Series for its first season. That statistic is the whole stakes of the evening for the CBS newcomer.
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences runs the vote, and its members nominated four shows in the top drama category. "Beyond the Gates" faces "Days of Our Lives" (eight total nominations), five-time reigning champion "General Hospital" (13) and "The Young and the Restless" (18). "The Bold and the Beautiful" missed the main lineup but still collected seven nominations. If the new show converts on Friday, it rewrites a record book that has favoured incumbents for five decades.
What makes the "Beyond the Gates" showing historic?
Two of its lead-actress slots carry the historical weight. Tamara Tunie, who plays Anita Williams Dupree, and Karla Mosley, who plays Dani Dupree, both landed nominations, and the source describes the pairing as a history-making showing for two Black female leads. They compete against Stacy Haiduk ("Days of Our Lives"), Michelle Stafford ("The Young and the Restless") and Heather Tom ("The Bold and the Beautiful").
The newcomer also spread across the craft categories:
- Best Writing Team for a Daytime Drama Series
- Best Casting for a Daytime Program
- Best Music Direction and Composition ("Episode 103")
- Best Technical Direction and Video ("Episode 104")
- Best Lighting Direction ("Episode 104")
- Best Hairstyling and Makeup ("Episode 103")
Add supporting-actor nominations for Timon Kyle Durrett and Mike Manning, emerging-talent slots for Ambyr Michelle and Arielle Prepetit, and a guest-performance nod for Jasmine Burke, plus the arts-program nomination "Beyond the Gates: Welcome to the Neighborhood." A first-year show with that footprint is not a curiosity; it is a competitive threat in every branch that voted.
Who presents, honours and tributes appear?
The ceremony starts at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT from the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles. As in 2025, no linear network carries the show. Viewers watch through the Emmys app, the Emmys YouTube channel and the official NATAS website. There is no host, breaking from recent years when Mario Lopez, Kevin Frazier, Nischelle Turner and Sheryl Underwood emceed.
NATAS will hand its Lifetime Achievement Award to Genie Francis. Special honourees also include Meredith Vieira, Byron Allen, Patrika Darbo, Francesca James, Stephen Brown and Rubin Ervin. Seven cancelled soaps receive tributes delivered by former cast members: Crystal Chappell for "Guiding Light," Lesli Kay for "As the World Turns," Joe Lando for "One Life to Live," Eva LaRue for "All My Children," A Martinez for "Santa Barbara," Juliet Mills for "Passions" and Alicia Leigh Willis for "Another World."
Which non-soap races decided the ballot?
The drama acting races carry the star power, but the voting members filled more than two dozen other categories. In lead actor, Eric Braeden ("The Young and the Restless") competes against Steve Burton ("General Hospital"), Scott Clifton and Thorsten Kaye (both "The Bold and the Beautiful") and Christian Jules LeBlanc ("The Young and the Restless").
The talk-series field pits "3rd Hour of Today," "The Drew Barrymore Show," "The Kelly Clarkson Show," "Live With Kelly and Mark," "Today With Jenna & Friends" and "The View" against one another. The talk-host category names the six "View" panellists collectively — Joy Behar, Whoopi Goldberg, Alyssa Farah Griffin, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin and Ana Navarro — against Kelly Clarkson, Tamron Hall, Jennifer Hudson and Sherri Shepherd.
The culinary host race matches Kardea Brown, Danielle Chang, Ina Garten, Pati Jinich and Andrew Zimmern. Personality categories split between daily shows, where the "Entertainment Tonight" and "Access Hollywood" teams compete with "Extra," and non-daily programs, where Keke Palmer, Giada De Laurentiis, Eva zu Beck, Derrick Campana and Joseph Rosendo appear.
Directing splits three ways: drama teams from "Days of Our Lives," "General Hospital" and "The Young and the Restless"; non-studio non-fiction entries including "The Wizard of Paws" and "Superskilled with Eva zu Beck"; and studio non-fiction, where "The Kelly Clarkson Show" episode 5033 appears in that category, in editing, art direction, costume design and hairstyling at once.
What changes in the race?
A "Beyond the Gates" win in Best Daytime Drama Series would break the 52-year pattern of veteran shows taking the top prize, and a Tunie or Mosley win would pair it with a first-season lead-actress trophy. Friday night either crowns a five-decade anomaly or confirms the incumbents' grip.
