Sherri Shepherd Stuns Daytime Emmys: 2% Odds Beat Kelly Clarkson's 90%
Sherri Shepherd won Best Talk Series Host with 1.6% odds, beating Kelly Clarkson's 90.3% as Clarkson's show won Best Talk Series and four total Daytime Emmys.

Judges’ notes
- Sherri Shepherd won Best Talk Series Host with 1.6% odds against Kelly Clarkson's 90.3% at the 2026 Daytime Emmys on Friday.
- The Kelly Clarkson Show won four Emmys, including Best Daytime Talk Series at 87.5% odds.
- Clarkson now has nine personal Daytime Emmys: five producing, four hosting.
- The show ended Aug. 31 after seven seasons; its final episodes are eligible for the 2027 Daytime Emmys under calendar-year rules.
Sherri Shepherd won Best Talk Series Host at the 2026 Daytime Emmys on Friday night with roughly a 2% chance of victory, toppling Kelly Clarkson, who carried a 90% shot at the trophy according to Gold Derby's odds. It was the upset of the night at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles.
Clarkson didn't attend. Neither did Shepherd. But the numbers tell the story of a race the pundits called wrong.
How big was the upset?
Per Gold Derby's final odds, Shepherd sat at 1.6% in the host category. Clarkson led at 90.3%. The rest of the field:
- The View hosts (Joy Behar, Whoopi Goldberg, Alyssa Farah Griffin, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin, Ana Navarro) — 4.8%
- Jennifer Hudson for The Jennifer Hudson Show — 3.2%
- Tamron Hall for Tamron Hall — unlisted odds
In other words, Shepherd didn't just beat the favorite. She beat a field where six of her nine rivals came from a single show.
What did Clarkson actually win?
Plenty. The Kelly Clarkson Show took Best Daytime Talk Series, plus three below-the-line Emmys:
- Best Hairstyling & Makeup — in a tie with Beyond the Gates
- Best Sound Mixing & Sound Editing
- Best Art Direction/Set Decoration/Scenic Design
That makes four wins for the show on the night. Clarkson's personal haul now stands at nine Daytime Emmys: five for producing, four for hosting, after Friday's Best Daytime Talk Series victory added one to her producing total.
The talk series category wasn't close on paper either. Gold Derby gave the show an 87.5% chance at its fifth win in the category. The other nominees trailed far behind: Live with Kelly and Mark at 4.7%, The Drew Barrymore Show at 3.1%, The View at 3.1%, The 3rd Hour of Today at 1.6%, and Today with Jenna and Friends unlisted.
Why was this season eligible?
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences uses calendar-year eligibility. So this year's ceremony honored the season that aired in 2025 — Clarkson's last.
The show went off the air on Aug. 31. "After seven amazing seasons, it's our final episode," Clarkson declared in her emotional finale, one last viral moment in a career full of them. The inaugural American Idol winner, current The Voice coach and three-time Grammy winner belted out a fan-requested cover of "Golden," the award-winning KPop Demon Hunters anthem.
What changes going forward?
One thing, mainly: the goodbye isn't over. Because of the calendar-year eligibility window, the show's final episodes remain in play, meaning its actual last hurrah comes at the 2027 Daytime Emmys.
For Shepherd, the host win reframes her standing in the category. She entered the night as the longest of long shots and left with the trophy, ending Clarkson's hosting streak just as the show itself bows out. For the talk-host race going forward, the door is now wide open.
