Carla Gutiérrez Joins Executive Producers of Oscar Contender 'Water Cooler'
Oscar-shortlisted filmmaker Carla Gutiérrez joins Sam Pollard, Geeta Gandbhir, Alisa Payne and Blair Foster as executive producers of the ICE-themed short, ahead of its IDFA debut.

Judges’ notes
- Carla Gutiérrez, director of Frida and editor of RBG, has joined Water Cooler as executive producer.
- The 12-minute short won Best Documentary Short at Palm Springs International ShortFest 2026, qualifying it for Oscar consideration.
- The film makes its international debut at IDFA in Amsterdam, which opens next week.
- It screens at DOC NYC on November 13 and at City Lights Film Festival in London on November 16.
- Emma V.F. filmed the documentary at Federal Plaza immigration court from November 2025 through January 2026.
Oscar-shortlisted filmmaker Carla Gutiérrez has signed on to executive produce Water Cooler, a 12-minute documentary short that already qualifies for Academy Award consideration after winning Best Documentary Short at the Palm Springs International ShortFest 2026.
The announcement lands as the film prepares for its international debut at IDFA in Amsterdam, the world's largest documentary festival, which opens next week. In a category where qualification marks only the entry point, the addition of named producers with Oscar histories changes how voters and consultants read a short's prospects.
Who now sits behind the film?
Gutiérrez directed Frida and edited RBG. She joins an executive producing roster that already carries significant awards weight:
- Oscar nominees Sam Pollard, Geeta Gandbhir, and Alisa Payne, producing through their company Message Pictures
- Emmy winner Blair Foster
Emma V.F. directed the short. In a category decided by a small voting pool, films that stack recognisable producer names tend to survive the shortlist cut more often, and this roster now does that work for Water Cooler.
What does the film actually show?
The documentary depicts federal agents waiting to arrest their targets outside courtrooms at New York's Federal Plaza immigration court. Emma V.F. filmed from November 2025 through January 2026.
A synopsis notes that the observational film "juxtaposes agents' casual conversations with tense scenes of the agents arresting immigrants who attended required court hearings to seek legal status."
How strong is the awards record so far?
Beyond the Palm Springs win that secured Oscar qualification, the short has collected credentials that matter in the documentary-short race:
- Best Documentary Short, Palm Springs International ShortFest 2026
- The Golden Starfish Award at the Hamptons International Film Festival
- Shortlisted for the Cinema Eye Honors
- Selected for DOC NYC's shortlist of the year's top documentaries
The film screens at DOC NYC on November 13 and at the City Lights Film Festival in London on November 16.
What did the new producers say?
Gutiérrez framed her involvement in political terms. "Immigrants around the world are being scapegoated as the source of all of society's problems," she said in a statement. "This dehumanization gives way to detached violence and cruelty, as Water Cooler strikingly portrays."
Director Emma V.F. welcomed the support as the film enters the international circuit. "I'm thrilled to have Carla's support as Water Cooler debuts on the international festival circuit," Emma V.F. commented. "I hope the film helps inspire people to fight the rise of fascism around the world."
The dual strategy is now visible: festival exposure at IDFA, DOC NYC, and London builds the film's profile while the producer slate signals institutional credibility to awards voters.
A qualified short with Palm Springs gold, two shortlist mentions, and Oscar-nominated producers attached has moved from contender to fixture in this year's documentary-short race.
