Janelle James will host the 32nd annual Critics Choice Awards on January 3, 2027, the ceremony that opens the televised awards-show season. The Critics Choice Association named her on the heels of a run that includes five consecutive Emmy nominations and a 2026 Critics Choice win for playing Principal Ava Coleman on ABC's Abbott Elementary. She replaces Chelsea Handler, who hosted the show for the past several years.

What does the change mean for the broadcast?

The swap changes the face of the first major telecast of the year, not its structure. The show keeps its venue, The Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, and its dual-network slot: E! carries it for the third consecutive year, USA Network for the second. The telecast airs live on both coasts from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. ET, 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. PT.

The leadership framed the choice in terms of credibility with the voting audience. CCA CEO Joey Berlin said: "For over three decades, the Critics Choice Awards have been the place where the conversation about the year's best work really takes off – and who better to host a show about the best of the best of TV and film than one of the very best in the business?" He added: "We are so honored to have the incredible Janelle James join us to host this year's Critics Choice Awards."

Val Boreland, President of Entertainment at VERSANT, stressed the booking as a programming play for the networks. "Janelle brings a singular comedic voice and sharp point of view to the stage, and we're thrilled to welcome her as host of the 32nd annual Critics Choice Awards," Boreland said, noting the broadcast returns to E! and USA Network.

In short: the CCA hired a reigning winner of its own award to front its own stage.

How strong is James's awards record?

The host arrives with a résumé the voting body already has judged. Her honors include:

  • Five consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Abbott Elementary.
  • A 2026 Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
  • NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2023 and 2026, plus nominations in 2024 and 2025.
  • Additional nominations from the Independent Spirit Awards, the Gotham Awards and the Television Critics Association.
  • A 2026 NAACP Image Award nomination for her role in the feature film One of Them Days.

That record gives the telecast a host who has worked both sides of the awards table within the past year.

What else is on James's calendar?

Netflix releases her first hour-long stand-up special, Janelle James: How Romantic, on November 10 — a platform push that will land two months before she takes the Barker Hangar stage. Her other credits include writing and acting on Showtime's Black Monday and Apple TV's Central Park. She is developing Rock City, a Hulu comedy she co-writes and executive produces with David Caspe, and she continues to headline stand-up tours nationwide.

What comes next in the race?

Nominations in both film and television categories will be announced on Friday, December 4, 2026. That date sets the calendar: nominations first, a Netflix special in between, then James opens the season live on January 3.
