Janelle James will host the 32nd Critics Choice Awards on Jan. 3, 2027, the Critics Choice Association announced Thursday — the first hosting assignment for a performer who already owns one of the group's own trophies. James, an Abbott Elementary star, won the CCA for Best Comedy Supporting Actress in 2026. She is also a five-time Emmy nominee for the ABC mockumentary, and her first hour-long stand-up special, Netflix's Janelle James: How Romantic, premieres Nov. 10. School's out, at least temporarily.

Why James?

The logic is straightforward: a current CCA winner hosting the CCAs. CCA CEO Joey Berlin framed it in historical terms: "For over three decades, the Critics Choice Awards have been the place where the conversation about the year's best work really takes off — and who better to host a show about the best of TV and film than one of the very best in the business?" Berlin added: "We are so honored to have the incredible Janelle James join us to host this year's Critics Choice Awards."

One might note the promotional timing. A Netflix special arriving Nov. 10, nominations Dec. 4, ceremony Jan. 3. Nobody schedules anything by accident in this town.

What are the key dates?

  • Nominations: Dec. 4, announced at 9 a.m. PT / 12 p.m. ET by Live From E!'s Erin Lim Rhodes and Will Marfuggi.
  • Where to watch the announcement: E!, USA Network, CriticsChoice.com, E! Online, plus the social channels for CCA and E!.
  • Ceremony: Jan. 3, 2027, simulcast live on both coasts on E! and USA Network, 4–7 p.m. PT / 7–10 p.m. ET.
  • Venue: Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif. — the fourth consecutive year the CCAs have landed there.

How predictive are these awards, really?

The film side is the organization's showpiece. The CCA bills itself as the most accurate predictor of the Oscar nominations, and the structural explanation helps: many CCA categories allow six nominees, against five at the Oscars, widening the overlap. The correlation has been sharper than predictive of late. For four consecutive years, the critics' Best Picture winner has gone on to win the Academy Award: Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), Oppenheimer (2023), Anora (2024), and One Battle After Another (2025). A four-for-four streak is not luck. It is also not binding.

Television is a different matter. Since the CCA began handing out TV prizes in 2011, no consistent pattern links its winners to the Emmys — because the calendars disagree. Since 2016, the CCAs have used calendar-year eligibility, while Emmy eligibility runs from June to May of the following year. The resulting mismatches are instructive: Abbott Elementary (2023), Better Call Saul (2023), The Americans (2019), and Silicon Valley (2016) all took the Critics Choice Award without converting it into the top Emmy. James's own show sits on that list. Her hosting gig, one suspects, is the consolidation prize working as intended.

Who votes?

The awards are decided by the Critics Choice Association, a body of nearly 500 active voting members specializing in film and/or television. That is a larger electorate than most critics' groups, and smaller than the Academy's thousands — which is precisely why the CCA likes its six-slot ballots and its four-year Best Picture streak.

The verdict: a safe, flattering booking. A reigning winner, a Netflix special in the pipeline, and a Jan. 3 air date. The race now has its narrator.
