'Michael' Lands Second-Ever Gotham Musical Tribute After $1 Billion Run
The Gotham Film Awards will grant only its second-ever Musical Tribute to the 'Michael' team — Fuqua, Domingo, Jaafar Jackson, Nia Long and Graham King — on Nov. 30 in New York.

Judges’ notes
- "Michael" grossed more than $1 billion globally, making it the highest-grossing biographical film of all time.
- The Gotham Musical Tribute will be presented Nov. 30 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.
- This is only the second Gotham Musical Tribute; Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson received the first last year for "Song Sung Blue."
- Honorees include director Antoine Fuqua, actors Colman Domingo, Jaafar Jackson and Nia Long, and producer Graham King.
- Gotham Awards nominees will be announced Oct. 27; a "Michael" sequel is in development.
The 36th Annual Gotham Film Awards will hand its Gotham Musical Tribute — only the second in the ceremony's history — to the cast and creative team behind "Michael," a biopic that has grossed more than $1 billion globally.
The ceremony takes place Nov. 30 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. Director Antoine Fuqua, actors Colman Domingo, Jaafar Jackson and Nia Long, and producer Graham King will receive the honor in person, according to the Gotham Film and Media Institute's announcement.
Two recipients per category is now a pattern. The Musical Tribute was inaugurated only last year, when Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson accepted it for "Song Sung Blue." The award exists, effectively, to catch music-driven films that the Gothams' competitive categories were never built to house.
What did the Gotham say?
Jeffrey Sharp, executive director of the Gotham Film and Media Institute, framed the choice in a statement: "For our second Gotham Musical Tribute, we are delighted to honor these incredibly talented actors and filmmakers for bringing Michael Jackson's life, legend and music to the screen. Their extraordinary work captures the humanity behind one of the world's most celebrated artists."
Sharp's phrasing does quiet work. "Humanity" is the word awards campaigns attach to biographical performances they want voters to treat as drama rather than imitation. Expect it to recur.
Who is actually being honored?
The tribute covers four named recipients and, by extension, the wider ensemble:
- Antoine Fuqua — director
- Colman Domingo — cast
- Jaafar Jackson — cast, and Michael Jackson's real-world nephew
- Nia Long — cast
- Graham King — producer
The film also stars Laura Harrier, Juliano Krue Valdi and Miles Teller. John Logan wrote the screenplay; King, John Branca and John McClain produced.
"Michael" traces Jackson's path from The Jackson Five to global stardom, on stage and off. The commercial record is the part voters cannot ignore: at more than $1 billion worldwide, it is the highest-grossing biographical film ever made, and a sequel is currently in development. No previous biopic has crossed that threshold.
For context on scale: $1 billion in theatrical gross places "Michael" in rare company for any genre, and it does so in a format — the music biopic — that historically tops out far lower.
What does the tribute change in the race?
A Gotham tribute is not a nomination, but it functions as early-season positioning. The Gothams, long the first major stop of the awards calendar, give studios a platform and a room full of industry voters roughly a month after nominees are announced on Oct. 27.
The Musical Tribute specifically buys "Michael" a guaranteed marquee moment at a ceremony focused on independent film — useful insurance for a studio biopic that must otherwise argue its way into acting and crafts conversations on merit. Domingo, a perennial awards fixture, gains another televised podium. Jaafar Jackson, in a debut screen role carrying an icon's likeness, gains the most.
What else is on the Nov. 30 program?
The Gothams are spreading the honors thin this year:
- Danny Boyle receives the Gotham Director Tribute for "Ink"
- "La Bola Negra" receives the Gotham Vanguard Tribute
- Laika Studios receives the Gotham Anniversary Tribute
Nominees for the competitive categories arrive Oct. 27, which is when the season's actual scoreboard starts filling in.
The verdict, then: a $1 billion biopic now holds a seat at the industry's first major table, two years into an award category designed largely for films like it. Whether that seat converts into nominations is a question for October. The tribute, at minimum, guarantees "Michael" starts the season introduced rather than knocking.
