‘La Bola Negra’ Takes Best Feature at 2026 Denver Film Festival
Los Javis' 'La Bola Negra' adds the Krzysztof Kieslowski Award to a six-festival haul, while Farrelly's 'I Play Rocky' takes the Denver audience prize.

Judges’ notes
- 'La Bola Negra' won Best Feature at the 2026 Denver Film Festival, its sixth festival prize after Cannes, Toronto, Hamptons, Sydney, San Sebastián and Busan
- Peter Farrelly's 'I Play Rocky' won the Audience Award for Narrative Feature and opened the festival's 49th edition, which ran Oct. 22 to Nov. 1
- Netflix acquired 'La Bola Negra' at Cannes, where it shared Best Director with Paweł Pawlikowski's 'Fatherland'
- John Leguizamo received the John Cassavetes Award; D'Arcy Carden, John Cho and Carrie Coon also received honors
- 'I Play Rocky' finished first runner-up to 'La Bola Negra' for TIFF's People's Choice Award
The 2026 Denver Film Festival handed its Krzysztof Kieslowski Award for Best Feature Film to "La Bola Negra" on November 1, the closing day of its 49th edition, which ran from October 22. The Spanish-language epic by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi — the pair known as Los Javis — added Denver to a run of festival prizes that now stretches across two continents and five prior events.
Peter Farrelly's "I Play Rocky" took the Audience Award for Narrative Feature. The film dramatizes Sylvester Stallone's campaign to make his 1976 boxing classic "Rocky" and served as the festival's opening night attraction. Screenwriter Peter Gamble traveled to Denver to launch the 49th edition.
What does the Denver result change in the Oscar race?
Quite a lot, on paper. "La Bola Negra" arrived in Colorado with what amounts to a full pre-Oscar trophy case:
- Best Director at Cannes, shared with Paweł Pawlikowski's "Fatherland" — where Netflix acquired the film
- People's Choice Award at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, a prize still widely read as a Best Picture harbinger
- Top honors at the Hamptons, Sydney, San Sebastián and Busan festivals
Netflix, which bought the film on the Croisette, now counts it among its strongest Oscar contenders in years. The Denver win does not add voting weight by itself, but it keeps the film in the conversation through the fall corridor. "I Play Rocky," the first runner-up to "La Bola Negra" in Toronto, proved it can win a crowd with its own audience prize — a signal that matters for a film positioning itself as a populist contender.
Who else was honored in Denver?
One year shy of its 50th edition, the festival screened several season contenders, including "All of a Sudden," "Elsinore," "Iron Boy," "Once Upon a Time in Harlem" and "Rose." John Leguizamo accepted the John Cassavetes Award for career achievement — with a possible Best Supporting Actor run ahead for his turn in Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey." Additional honors went to D'Arcy Carden, John Cho and Carrie Coon.
"This year's Denver Film Festival celebrated the best of world cinema, as well as the best from our own backyard," artistic director Matthew Campbell said in a statement. "The winners and honorees of the 49th Festival represent the very reason we go to the movies: to be challenged, to see ourselves on screen, and to be reminded of all we hold we hold in common." (Gold Derby, which reported the statement, served on the True Grit Award jury.)
