Elsinore Leads 2026 BIFA Nominations With 12 Nods
Elsinore leads the 2026 British Independent Film Awards with 12 nominations, while Mike Leigh's Tender Loving Care scores four but misses Kate O'Flynn in the supporting race.

Judges’ notes
- Elsinore received a leading 12 nominations at the 2026 British Independent Film Awards.
- Craft winners are announced Nov. 24; remaining awards follow at London's Roundhouse on Dec. 6.
- Tender Loving Care earned film, director and screenplay nods, but Kate O'Flynn missed the supporting performance race.
- I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning follows with 8 nominations; Animol has 7.
- BIFA's supporting performance category is nongendered, fielding six nominees including Billie Piper and Tom Courtenay.
Andrew Scott's Oscar hopeful Elsinore collected 12 nominations at the 2026 British Independent Film Awards, more than any other film in the field. The count sets the pace for a race that splits its ceremonies across two dates: craft winners on Nov. 24, remaining awards at London's Roundhouse on Dec. 6.
Elsinore, the true story of a Shakespearean actor delivering a final performance of Hamlet while battling AIDS, will contend for Best British Independent Film, director for Simon Stone, lead performance for Scott, supporting performance for Billie Piper, and screenplay for Stephen Beresford. The film also spread across the craft categories: Valerio Bonelli for editing, Mike Eley for cinematography, Nadia Stacey for make-up and hair, Stefan Gregory for original music, Helen Scott for costume design, Mel Page for production design, and Jessica Ronane for casting.
Where does Tender Loving Care stand?
Mike Leigh's film took nominations for Best British Independent Film, director, screenplay, and Best Ensemble Performance — but the list contains one conspicuous absence. Kate O'Flynn, the Widow's Bay breakout being positioned for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar run, did not make the cut in BIFA's nongendered Best Supporting Performance race. Her ensemble citation, shared with Marion Bailey, Paul Jesson and Alice Bailey Johnson, is the only place her name appears. For a supporting-actress campaign built on momentum, a home-turf miss is a data point rivals will use.
The supporting race she missed runs to six names: Anna Calder-Marshall (Queen at Sea), Tom Courtenay (Queen at Sea), Sekou Diaby (Animol), Claire Foy (Ink), Billie Piper (Elsinore), and Bill Pullman (Everybody Digs Bill Evans). Piper now carries Elsinore's flag in a category where its closest competitor fields no candidate at all.
What does the wider field look like?
The nomination counts behind the two leaders:
- I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning — 8
- Animol — 7
- Effi o Blaenau — 6
- Queen at Sea — 6
- Extra Geography, Straight Circle, Florid — 5 each
Best British Independent Film pits Effi o Blaenau, Elsinore, I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning, Queen at Sea and Tender Loving Care against each other. Leigh and Stone both land in the ten-name screenplay race, alongside Gary Owen (Effi o Blaenau), Enda Walsh and Clio Barnard (I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning), Lance Hammer (Queen at Sea), Andrew Haigh (A Long Winter) and Mark Jenkin (Rose of Nevada).
Best Lead Performance offers a six-way contest: Juliette Binoche (Queen at Sea), Erin Doherty (Faith), Leisa Gwenllian (Effi o Blaenau), Jonathan Jules (Florid), Tut Nyuot (Animol) and Andrew Scott. Best Joint Lead Performance cites four pairs, including Séamus McLean Ross and Samuel Bottomley in California Schemin' and Chimpaye Florence Mariserena with Bizimana Hussain in Small Gods.
Which debuts and documentaries registered?
The Douglas Hickox Award for best debut director lists Billy Lumby (Florid), Molly Manners (Extra Geography), Bertil Nilsson (Masc), Louis Paxton (The Incomer) and Ashley Walters (Animol). Paxton doubles up with a Best Debut Screenwriter nod for The Incomer, competing against Miriam Battye (Extra Geography), Thea Gajić (Surviving Earth), Rhys Marc Jones (Black Church Bay) and Jess O'Kane (Bad Apples).
Best Feature Documentary names five titles, including One in a Million — produced by Itab Azzam, Jack MacInnes, Will Anderson, James Bluemel, Andrew Palmer and Raney Aronson-Rath — and We, the Hated from Rich Felgate and David Allen. One in a Million also appears in Breakthrough Producer. Best International Independent Film includes Ryusuke Hamaguchi's All of a Sudden, Lee Chang-dong's Possible Love, Jordan Firstman's Club Kid, La Bola Negra and La Gradiva.
On the craft side, Best Effects is a three-way contest among Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom, The Magic Faraway Tree and The Incomer. Connie Farr took two of three music supervision slots, for I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning and Queen at Sea. Five cinemas — Abbeygate, Campus West, Hippodrome, the Kinema in the Woods and the Ultimate Picture Palace — compete for Cinema of the Year.
What does this change for the Oscar race?
Twelve nominations give Elsinore's campaign a quantifiable homefront argument: breadth across performance and craft. Tender Loving Care's totals are solid, but O'Flynn's omission leaves its supporting-actress push without a BIFA citation to lean on. Voters make their own decisions — but on Nov. 24 and Dec. 6, the U.K. indie scene will tell these campaigns which arguments landed.
