Judges’ notes

  1. Eight performers receive the SBIFF Virtuosos Award at a ceremony on Feb. 7, 2027
  2. Dave Karger moderates the Virtuosos evening for the 17th consecutive year
  3. The 42nd Santa Barbara International Film Festival runs Feb. 3-13, 2027
  4. The eight honorees span best actress, best actor and supporting actress Oscar races

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival has named eight performers — Carrie Coon, Mariana di Girolamo, Rosalind Eleazar, Jordan Firstman, Anthony Ippolito, Jaafar Jackson, Inde Navarrette and Kate O'Flynn — as recipients of its Virtuosos Award, with the ceremony set for Sunday, Feb. 7, 2027, at the historic Arlington Theatre.

All eight arrive with 2026 breakthrough performances that now sit inside the Oscar conversation, which is precisely the profile the award exists to recognize. The list splits cleanly across three races.

  • Best actress: Coon (The Liberation), Eleazar (Misty Green) and Navarrette (Obsession).
  • Best actor: Firstman (Club Kid), Ippolito (I Play Rocky) and Jackson (Michael).
  • Best supporting actress: di Girolamo (Wild Horse Nine) and O'Flynn (Tender Loving Care), both of whom trade coverage currently treats as frontrunners.

What does the Virtuosos evening actually involve?

The format runs on conversation rather than trophy-handling. Each honoree discusses their work individually, then the octet sits together for a group panel ahead of the awards presentation. Dave Karger, a host at TCM and the author of the new book 50 Movie Nights: Contemporary Stars on Their Favorite Classic Films, will moderate for the 17th consecutive year.

Karger framed the class of 2027 in a statement: "This year's Virtuosos are a powerhouse group from the most talked-about films of the season. I think it's especially fitting that so many of them are international performers and I can't wait to help welcome them all to Santa Barbara."

Why does this stop matter in the Oscar race?

The guest list of past honorees shows the mechanism at work. Previous Virtuosos recipients include Teyana Taylor, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Renate Reinsve, Wagner Moura, Wunmi Mosaku, Inga Ibsdotter-Lilleaas, Kieran Culkin, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, MiMi Madison, Lily Gladstone, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Andrew Scott, Austin Butler, Danielle Deadwyler, Ke Huy Quan, Jeremy Strong, Ariana DeBose, Alana Haim, Troy Kotsur, Riz Ahmed and Zendaya.

Several of those names — Grande, Madison, Gladstone, Randolph, Quan, Kotsur among them — went on to Oscar nominations or wins in their respective years. The award functions as a mid-campaign checkpoint: it gathers performers whom voters are already weighing, puts them on a stage two days before nomination voting typically closes in early February, and generates press coverage in the Los Angeles media market.

The 2027 class carries an additional wrinkle that Karger singled out: a heavy international contingent, with di Girolamo, Eleazar and O'Flynn among the performers from outside the United States whose films now anchor the supporting-actress race.

When and where?

The Virtuosos evening falls inside the festival's larger run. The 42nd edition of SBIFF runs Feb. 3-13, 2027, with the Virtuosos ceremony landing on Feb. 7 at the Arlington Theatre in downtown Santa Barbara.

Eight contenders, one stage, and five days of festival programming around them: Santa Barbara has again placed itself on the campaign calendar at the moment voters are deciding.
