Eight performers — including Carrie Coon, Jaafar Jackson and Inde Navarrette — will receive the 2027 Virtuoso Awards at the 42nd Santa Barbara International Film Festival, the fest announced Friday.

The full slate, tied to the films that put them in this season's conversation:

  • Carrie Coon — The Liberation
  • Mariana di Girolamo — Wild Horse Nine
  • Rosalind Eleazar — Misty Green
  • Jordan Firstman — Club Kid
  • Anthony Ippolito — I Play Rocky
  • Jaafar Jackson — Michael
  • Inde Navarrette — Obsession
  • Kate O'Flynn — Tender Loving Care

Per SBIFF, the Virtuoso Award recognizes a select group of talent whose exceptional work has placed them at the center of the conversation around the year's most noteworthy cinematic performances.

Why the honor matters in the race

Santa Barbara has hardened into a valued stop on the movie-awards circuit. The timing does the work: the 42nd edition runs February 3-13, 2027, right inside the corridor between Oscar nominations and final voting, when contenders need one more room of industry voters and press.

Last year's Virtuoso-adjacent precedent is the telling one. Michael B. Jordan took SBIFF's Outstanding Performer of the Year Award ahead of his eventual Best Actor Oscar win for Sinners. Honorees in that same category stretch from Ralph Fiennes and Cate Blanchett to Rami Malek, Margot Robbie, Emma Stone and Heath Ledger — a list that reads like a decade of Oscar ballots.

SBIFF's Roger Durling-era programming has made the Virtuoso dinner a reliable audition: a moderated stage conversation that gives unknown-in-Los-Angeles faces a clip reel in front of awards press.

Who else is being honored?

The Virtuoso class follows an earlier, bigger announcement. John Malkovich, a two-time Oscar nominee who won the Best Actor prize at this year's Venice Film Festival for Martin McDonagh's upcoming Wild Horse Nine, will receive SBIFF's Outstanding Performer of the Year Award during the February 3-13 run.

Malkovich leads off the festival's 2027 awards announcements. In the black comedy Wild Horse Nine, he stars with Sam Rockwell as a pair of CIA agents traveling from Santiago to Easter Island on the eve of the 1973 Chilean coup, confronting dark pasts and getting tangled in present-day conspiracies. The Searchlight Pictures release hits theaters November 6.

"A legendary actor gives this year in Wild Horse Nine his best performance to date in which he combines pathos, volatility, vulnerability and tenderness," SBIFF executive director Roger Durling said Thursday in a release announcing the award. "It's a high-wire act that shows us what a commanding artist he is, and we are thrilled to be honoring him."

What does the Virtuoso slate signal?

This year's international tilt drew notice from the festival itself. "This year's Virtuosos are a powerhouse group from the most talked-about films of the season," said Karger. "I think it's especially fitting that so many of them are international performers and I can't wait to help welcome them all to Santa Barbara."

Di Girolamo arrives via McDonagh's Wild Horse Nine — the same film carrying Malkovich's honors — giving Searchlight two podium moments at one festival. Jackson's citation for Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic in which he plays his uncle, and Navarrette's for Obsession put younger names on the same stage as Coon, whose The Liberation profile anchors the group.

More 2027 SBIFF award winners are expected in the coming weeks, with the festival confirming additional tributes ahead of the February 3 opening.
