Tony Awards Extend CBS Broadcast Deal Through 2032
CBS will broadcast the Tony Awards through 2032, extending a 48-year run. The 80th edition airs live coast-to-coast on CBS and Paramount+ on June 13, 2027.
Judges’ notes
- The Tony Awards signed a new deal keeping the ceremony on CBS through 2032.
- The partnership has run 48 years, since 1978.
- The 80th Tony Awards air live coast-to-coast on CBS and Paramount+ on Sunday, June 13, 2027.
- Raj Kapoor and Sarah Levine Hall will co-showrun the 2027 show, producing alongside Jack Sussman.
- The Tonys are presented by the American Theatre Wing and the Broadway League.
The Tony Awards will remain on CBS through 2032 under a new rights agreement announced by the two organizations. The deal extends a broadcast relationship that has run for 48 consecutive years, dating back to 1978 — roughly 25 telecasts per quarter-century on the same network.
CBS is now owned by Skydance, making this the first long-term Tonys renewal signed under the new ownership structure. For the awards' presenters, the American Theatre Wing and the Broadway League, the agreement locks in a broadcast home into the next decade.
When will the 80th Tonys air?
The announcement also set the date for the milestone 80th edition. The ceremony will air live coast-to-coast on CBS and stream on Paramount+ on Sunday, June 13, 2027 — the eightieth anniversary telecast of the Broadway honors.
The coast-to-coast live designation matters for voting-body optics and audience reach alike: simultaneous national airing removes the tape-delay gap that historically pushed West Coast viewership to later time slots.
Who is producing the 2027 show?
The producing team for the 80th anniversary ceremony is already set, more than a year out:
- Raj Kapoor and Sarah Levine Hall — co-showrunners and producers
- Jack Sussman — producer
- Patrick Menton and Rob Paine — co-executive producers
- Patrick Menton — additionally serves as head of talent
Kapoor and Levine Hall will run the show day-to-day as co-showrunners, while Sussman — a veteran live-event producer — joins at producer level.
What did the partners say?
American Theatre Wing president and CEO Heather Hitchens and Broadway League president Jason Laks addressed the 48-year track record directly in a joint statement: "We are thrilled to extend our long-standing partnership with CBS. For the past 48 years, we have collaborated with CBS to bring the best of Broadway to theatre fans all around the world and we look forward to marking the 80th anniversary of the Tony Awards with our best show yet."
CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach framed the deal within the network's broader arts programming. "CBS has a celebrated history of supporting the creative arts on television and the Tony Awards are a cornerstone of that past, present and future," Reisenbach said. She added that she and George Cheeks — the CBS co-CEO — are "thrilled to extend the Network's 48-year partnership with the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League and showcase the extraordinary talent, unforgettable performances and incomparable energy of Broadway to viewers across the country for years to come."
What does the deal change in the awards race?
In practical terms, stability. The Tonys avoid the rights shuffle that has hit other major awards properties in the streaming era. The dual-window structure — live linear on CBS, simultaneous stream on Paramount+ — continues, keeping the ceremony on a broadcast footprint while preserving a streaming platform for cord-cutting viewers.
The agreement runs through 2032, meaning at least six more CBS telecasts after the 80th edition, and the presenters enter the anniversary cycle with their distribution fully settled.
